VAB Concrete Slabs

Jones Edmunds provided condition assessment and recommendations for the design and construction details for the repair of reinforced steel corrosion and spalling of concrete decks in the Kennedy Space Center’s Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), including documentation of damage and the design of typical repairs for the identified damage. As Task Manager, Mr. Welkenbach planned the field investigation program and led the field teams for a concrete slabs condition assessment in the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center.

The field investigations involved observation and data logging of about 1.5 million square feet of elevated concrete slabs in six towers and a low bay roof. Mr. Welkenbach coordinated with and managed a concrete forensic team for in-depth investigation of 23 selected slabs and helped produce an extensive report with assessment, analysis, and repair recommendations. Mr. Welkenbach also played an integral role in the design development of the subsequent concrete repair design construction document package, also part of this project.
